A M S T E R D A M

My past few blogs have all been beach holiday's so I thought id mix it up a bit with a city break and where else better than Amsterdam?
Capital of the Netherlands, Amsterdam is a popular spot for many tourists.

Getting There?

We booked our flights via EasyJet which was so easily done through their app, we decided to go in the summer as we wanted the weather to be good, although Amsterdam is picturesque the whole year through. We flew out on the 3rd August – 7th August and I definitely could of spent longer there as we didn’t get to visit everywhere we would of liked to as there is so much for you to do! We were able to get a tram from the airport to the center where we were able to walk to our hotel.

Where to stay?

We stayed at a hotel quite close to the center as we had never been before and assumed that the tram’s would be very confusing but once you get used to them they were fine, after browsing online we chose to stay at City Hotel Amsterdam, it was super pretty and so close to everything, although I do remember it being quite expensive although this could have been because we had gone over Gay Pride which is celebrated in Amsterdam through large a large festival and street parties which we didn’t realize until we got there although it did add to the atmosphere in the city and everyone was in such high spirits, the hotel staff were super helpful as we weren’t sure about directions and they were able to give clear directions and recommend for stuff for us to do while we were there also as we hadn’t pre-booked anything.

What to do?

1.     Madame Tussauds – Wax Museum, this is in the square and quite easy accessible through walking especially if you’re in and around the city. There’s a few Madame Tussauds throughout the world but because I have never been to any I felt this was a must-do for me to do, it's such an enjoyable experience learning about different people and seeing the effort that was put into the wax figures.

2.     Amsterdam Dungeons – This is not for the faint hearted but it is an eye-opening experience, the staff really do get involved to create a scary experience for all and participation is vital from everyone on the tour, we got our tickets at a stall in Amsterdam, they are everywhere but id recommend buying tickets before online as it will save you money once your there!

3.     Amsterdam Ice Bar – This is like nothing I have ever seen before and definitely worth the visit, you don’t need to wrap up too warm as they provide warm coats and scarves and with most tickets you get drink tokens which allow you two drinks within the ice bar itself, one being a shot and then a spirit and mixer. Before you go in you are seated in the inside bar where you hear a story all about the ice bar and the creation of it and then you can have drinks while waiting to go in. We had also just got our tickets at a stall over here but it definitely would be cheaper to book prior online!

4.     Amsterdam Canal Cruises – This is the best way to tour the city I find and is a great opportunity to take photos also and there is a tour guide on board to point out all the different landmarks the city has to offer, they have all different kinds of canal rides some include drink and food also! You can purchase tickets at stalls over in Amsterdam or online prior if you wish to save some money!

There is so much to do in Amsterdam that we didn’t get to do such as:
·      Anne Frank House
·      Amsterdam Swing
·      Amsterdam Bike Tours
·      Heineken Experience

I hope this has been helpful and if you have any questions feel free to get in touch!
